How To Choose The Right Area Rug – When choosing a new rug, there are many places to start. Some people start with styles or designs in mind, while others start with a budget in mind. While these are important to consider, we recommend that you start by calculating the size of rug you need. Read on to learn everything you need to know about the most common sizes of area rugs, how to choose them, and the best ways to display them in your home.
While the rules for individual rooms will vary slightly (check our room guide for specifics), there are a few general rules that apply throughout your home. First, you should buy a rug that covers as much of the available space as possible while leaving an 18- to 20-inch border around the perimeter.
How To Choose The Right Area Rug
Don’t just center the rug in the room. Instead, think about how your furniture is arranged. For example, the living room should be placed based on the arrangement of the chair, and the bedroom is often placed under the bed. Before you buy, you can make sure you have the right size by first marking where the rug will go with painter’s tape or masking tape.
How To Choose The Right Size Rug
Small ones may not fill a room, but they are still very versatile. 2′ x 3′ are best used in small spaces or where the functionality of the carpet is more important than its visual impact. The entryway, bathrooms, kitchen and even walk-in closets can all benefit from a small rug.
The medium ones are great for small living rooms, offices, or under the foot of a queen bed. It is usually recommended to place the furniture so that either all the legs are on the carpet or at least the feet in front. With a carpet that is too small, this layout can be narrow, but if you place the furniture further away, your carpet can be like a postage stamp in the middle of the room. A great way to avoid all of this is to place your smaller rug over a large, inexpensive natural fiber rug. This way, you get the flavor of your patterned rug and it can also fill the space without breaking the bank.
8′ x 10′ is one of the most popular surface sizes. They are perfect for filling small and medium living rooms and under most kitchen tables.
They also fit completely under a queen bed, with room to spread out for nightstands on either side.
How To Choose An Area Rug For Your Living Room
The large ones, 9 x 12 “and more, are fantastic in living rooms and formal dining rooms with a large table. With this size, it becomes much easier to place your furniture completely on the rug that provides a border around the arrangement.
The effect is especially dramatic in open floor plans, where a large rug creates a visually distinct space without the need for walls.
While runners are generally thought of as a runner, they are much more versatile than that. Runners are perfect for any awkwardly shaped space in your home that could use a little more comfort. In the kitchen, they can sit on the counters to provide some cushioning while you work. Similarly, runners can work well in larger bathrooms to keep feet warm and prevent slipping on wet tile floors. It is also very popular to use runners on each side of the bed to give something sweet to pass in the morning.
Of course, runners are always great in traditional entrances and corridors, where they help unify the style of the whole house and protect the floor in these high-traffic areas.

Choosing a rug that is too small for your bed is a common mistake and can actually make your room look smaller and feel unbalanced. The 8’x10′ rug is the most popular because it works for queen and king beds. Let’s talk about the dimensions of the rugs according to the size of your bed!
An area rug of 9′ x 12′ is quite large, but when working with a king bed, it is proportional and what you prefer to use if there is enough space. A rug of this size will give you plenty of space to cover both sides of the bed as well as the end of the bed.

An 8 x 10′ rug also works under a king bed. If you are working with a smaller primary room, I advise you to go with this size so that the rug does not cover too much space that can be cluttered.
