How To Choose The Right Size Rug For Living Room – We’re back with one of our favorite topics: rugs. This is one of our most requested topics, both “how” and “what”. And we understand! This is a large piece that isn’t cheap, so you need to get it right first, because who wants to return a rug? the person. So, if you’re looking for a living room rug right now or want to spice things up, we hope these formulas help you find it. We also bought a bunch of new carpets. Appreciate it 🙂
One of the biggest mistakes we see (as we pointed out earlier) is “the mat is too small.” However, today I will tell you not only how to choose the right size, but also how to adjust it. It’s easy to say, “don’t take it too small,” but here we like to go a little deeper than that. So we’ve got formulas, rules, and general “no-no’s” to help you out (oh and some picks to buy). Let the (fun) investigation of carpets begin…
How To Choose The Right Size Rug For Living Room
I know from personal experience how daunting it can be to find a rug for your living room. A few are affordable (we found some, don’t worry), and returning them is a pain. But it is the main room of your living room, and it should look good. So let’s first get to the heart of the matter regarding the rules for each of the development options approved by EHD…
How To Pick The Right Rug Size For Your Living Room
Measure the amount of mat you need with painter’s tape to get an idea of how you feel. We promise it’s a lifesaver.
If you have a large enough room and want all of your conversation pieces to be on your rug (i.e. sofa, accent chairs, coffee table, etc.), make sure to allow about 8 inches from edge to edge of your furniture. From your rag. This way, your furniture won’t look like a child dangerously close to the edge of the subway platform. Consider the 8″ point as your official yellow line. Don’t go there or anything.
Then give yourself 10″ to 18″ from the rug to the wall (maybe even 24″ if you have the space). If you get too close, your rug will overwhelm your space and “almost” look like an awkward rug.
The main exception to these rules is if your sofa is against a wall (or a few inches away from our recommended distance to avoid disturbing the wall). Your carpet can be a little closer so you don’t waste valuable real estate in common areas.
How To Choose The Right Rug Size For Every Room
This arrangement can be the reference in these regions (and probably the world). All of your furniture can be “playable” but can also be individuals. Isn’t that what we want for all our carefully selected furniture?
With this, you need the front legs of the sofa and any chairs to rest on it. Here you don’t play “furniture lava” where the carpet is the only safe zone. Let those back legs hang down and make room.
Although this arrangement does not make your room feel spacious. The rule of thumb here is to run the rug under each room about 1/3 the width of the room.
For example: If your chair is 21″, make sure your rug is about 7 inches lower (give or take).
What Is The Right Area Rug Size For A Queen Bed?
In the past, Emily and Orlando made a video on how to choose the perfect size mat and if you’re a visual person (like me), it will help you understand why these rules help you find your perfect fit. :
“But EHD, I have a 5’x8′ vintage rug that fits my room perfectly. Can I really not use it? Fear not reader! You can place this beautiful vintage rug on top of a large rug. Yes, it is completely legal and can be great if you find the right deal.
An almost foolproof way to achieve this is to choose a large base rug, such as natural jute, and then layer smaller rugs (of a different color and material). You can take Emily and Jenny Kane inspiration from the photos above and place your small rug in the center of the large room. But if you want to go further, you can move them to the middle as long as the front legs of your seat rest on one of them.
It looks cool, but you have to be careful. First of all, what does “float” mean? Well, that means your rug is under your coffee table, but not under your seats. I know, sorry.
How To Choose The Right Sized Rug For Living Room
Here’s the thing. If you have a nice rug that’s just a few inches short of your couch and chairs, you won’t find us calling the rug police. We recommend no more than 5″ of space between your sofa and rug. Anything more and it will look too small and probably make you sad.
We’re weird…with rug shapes. There are more options than the classic rectangle. These types of rugs are perfect for oddly shaped rooms (like if you have a corner fireplace) and are easy to float and layer like Emily did in the living room of a mountain home.

But there are no real rules for this, just make sure you buy in proportion to your sofa and at least put the majority of your seat legs on a section of the rug.
