Rug Guide: A Room By Room Guide To Rug Sizes

When buying a rug, the first thing to consider is the size, shape and layout of the room. You want to make sure that the rug is large enough to accommodate the room, because too small a rug can make the room feel cramped and cramped, and the same goes for an area rug that’s too big. This is why measurement is so important.

Depending on how you want to arrange your furniture, there are different layout options for you to choose a rug from. There are three main furniture types for carpet layouts: just the front legs on the carpet, all the furniture legs on the carpet, or all the furniture off the carpet next to the coffee table (use the scene we created below for reference). If you want to cover all your furniture except the coffee table, make sure the rug is at least as wide as your sofa.

Once you’ve decided on the layout and size, you can use painter’s tape to locate the carpet to help you better visualize the carpet in your room.

If you have benches or ottomans at the end of your bed, you’ll want to make sure your rug is wide enough to sit on and back at least 12 inches.
