Google Fiber Owned High Speed Internet Provider Webpass Comes To Seattle
Google Fiber is the fastest internet provider in the US and consistently provides the fastest average speeds to its customers. With a published peak speed of 2,000 Mbps and a 12-month average download speed of 167.1 Mbps, the fiber provider achieved an Integrated Speed Score (ISS) of 185.2.
ISS is a way of ranking internet speed performance. This includes 90% of the provider’s average download speed and 10% of the same provider’s average download speed. From June 1, 2021 to June 1, 2022, we made the score based on an analysis of data from 2.6 million speed tests performed with our internet speed test tool.
Although it’s only available in 19 cities, Google’s flagship fiber optic service has been the fastest internet provider every year since 2018.
But other providers also showed impressive scores. Verizon is the fastest Internet provider with a top announced speed of 2,048 Mbps and an ISS of 156.0. Xfinity, MetroNet and AT&T followed with scores of 133.3 to 147.7.

A growing number of cable and cable internet providers are racing to push internet plans to new multi-layered heights. AT&T, Ziply, and Optimum now offer plans over 5,000 Mbps in some locations. Xfinity has plans that go up to 6,000,000 Mbps (but it’s hard to find). Google Fiber and Frontier have 5,000 Mbps plans. Smaller providers such as Advanced Stream and Miles Broadband offer 10,000 Mbps plans.
Most internet providers offer a maximum speed of 940–1,000,000 Mbps. For most Internet users, something faster isn’t necessary, and high costs and limited availability make some of these plans impractical. Even 1,000 Mbps is stretched, and many people have slower speeds. But it’s clear that the push toward faster speeds and higher bandwidth is a big selling point for Internet users who spend more time online each year.

Between 2018 and 2021, major US internet providers saw annual speed increases. We tracked the progress of 16 internet providers during this period, and there were significant improvements in average speed performance.
Wireless Internet providers, in particular, have made great strides over the past five years. In 2018, Google Fiber was one of only two Internet providers with average download speeds above 90 Mbps. By 2021, Google Fiber’s average download speed reached 164 Mbps, higher than the national average.

Top 10 Internet Service Providers Without Service Contracts
Some providers have made significant progress by moving away from DSL service to focus more on fiber.
DSL is widely available, but has relatively slow speeds of up to 140 Mbps, and the number of DSL subscribers has declined in recent years. Juice availability is limited throughout the country. But Internet companies are ramping up their fiber networks because they have more power — fiber speeds often exceed 1,000 Mbps, but sometimes go faster with multiple speeds.
Verizon has scaled back its DSL offerings in recent years, laying thousands of miles of fiber optic cable in new markets to support Fios Internet bundles as well as expanding its 5G wireless footprint.
At the same time, average download speeds on Verizon Fios plans increased significantly—from 85 Mbps in 2018 to 145 Mbps in 2019.

Also, AT&T delayed its interest in DSL. The company temporarily suspended its DSL service in October 2020, and in March 2022 announced a plan to eliminate half of its DSL system by 2025 to make way for a single provider of fiber and 5G.
Meanwhile, average download speeds have increased by nearly 200%, from 40 Mbps in 2018 to 117 Mbps in 2021. (More on AT&T speeds in the section below).
Although fiber Internet providers typically cost twice as much as DSL providers, many DSL customers are unlikely to switch to a fiber-only Internet connection. Wired Internet is the least common type of Internet connection in the United States, and experts believe that more and more former DSL customers are switching to cable Internet, a trend that has been going on for the past decade.
As for new fiber customers, many of them already have cable internet and switch because of the benefits, such as faster speeds and flat rates.

Cable internet just got faster too. Xfinity’s average download speed will double from 2018 to 2021, from 66 Mbps to 143 Mbps. Cox made a big jump from 51 Mbps (2018) to 135 Mbps (2021).
Cable does not match fiber in terms of bandwidth. Gigabit plans are not as widely available on cable connections as they are on fiber, and Gigabit cable plans are often more expensive. Cable lags behind fiber when it comes to upload speeds. On a cable connection, uploads are often only 10% of download speed, and fiber is the only type of connection that offers symmetrical upload and download speeds.
But coaxial cable connections are more widely available than fiber nationwide, and cable internet providers have made technological advances in recent years to streamline performance. Beginning in 2013, the introduction of DOCSIS
3.1, a technology standard that allows high-speed Internet data transmission over coaxial cable TV infrastructure, opened gigabit download speeds from cable connections. More recently, the pandemic has forced major cable providers like Xfinity and Cox to offer faster speeds to meet the growing needs of customers.
Of all the providers we looked at, only two were flat or slow over the past four years – Hughesnet and Viasat. Both of these are satellite internet providers, with internet speeds in rural areas lagging behind national growth trends. Stagnation in DSL service hasn’t helped rural customers either, but new services like 4G LTE Internet and Starlink may finally boost speeds in the more remote areas of the country.
